Spituk Monastery

Spituk monastery is founded around 500 years ago and is one of the oldest religious monasteries in Ladakh. Some of the ancient thankhas present in the monastery were shifted from Potala Palace in Lhasa. The monastery has a statue of Kali, whose face is being cloaked throughout the year but it is only uncloaked for one day which is during Spituk festival. The architecture of the Spituk Monastery comprises of the main Dukhang, which is the assembly hall.

One of the major events of the monastery is spituk gostor festival where people fit nine whole yards. The festival takes place on the 11th month of Tibetan calendar every year. Mask dances are performed at spituk gustor festival during winter. It rejoices the victory of good and lessens the power of bad happenings. The key goal is to promote world peace, happiness and well-being of living beings.

The Dukhang is the main assembly hall in the monastery. Pictures of the guarding deities are painted on the walls both inside and outside the doorway. The center of the chamber holds the statue of Sakyamuni. And a statue of the eleven-headed Avalokitesvara is placed to the right.
