Shey monastery

Shey monastery and palace is perched on mountainous hill top presenting itself cloaked with unique walls. It is located around15 kilometers from Leh town. When you are with your camera, you can capture a green landscape down the lane of Shey village. There are two ways to reach the monastery; one is to choose the path that leads directly to the monastery yet the other one requires you to circumambulate and takes longer. If you are scared of heights, then you will choose the first option.

Shey monastery was built in the 16th Century AD. A high copper statue of Lord Buddha stands in Du-Khang and it is 10 meter tall. Wall paintings are decorated on the upper floor while museum is at the lower floor. Later, King Deldan Nagmyal constructed Shey Palace. Shey Palace was the home of the royal family till 1834 AD and then they finally moved to Stok palace.

Shey monastery comprises of two annual festivals known as Shey Doo Lhoo (sowing season) and Shey Rupla (harvesting season). These two festivals gleam with pride and leave an impact to those who are fortunate to have witnessed it. The best time to visit Shey monastery is during the two festivals. You can choose your package from July to September. You can feed biscuits and bread to the ducks and fish as it is a good deed you earn while fulfilling your bucket list.
