Amidst the peaceful, extraordinary and frolicsome vista stands Liker monastery with an amusing set up. Liker monastery stands beautifully with deserts scattered around. It is located about 56 kilometer away from Leh town. This monastery dwells at a height of 3700 meters with an uplifting landscape. The monastery was founded in the 11th century by Lama Duwang Chosje under the regime of King Lhachen Gyalpo. This monastery belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
When you drive towards Sham valley, Liker monastery is a point where your sightseeing tours actually begin in Sham valley. Your guide will tell you endless tale and talk of its history. The literal translation of the word Likir is “The Naga – Encircled”. The monastery was once destructed by fire and then renovation took place in the 18th century.
The monastic school is run by the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies and they are taught in three languages such as Hindi, English, and Sanskrit. There are two prayer halls called Dukhang. Statues of Maitreya Buddha, Boddhisattva, Amitabha, Sakyamuni, and Tsong Khapa are present in the prayer hall. Every captivating season invites the festival of Dosmochey which occurs every year from 27th day to the 29th day of the 12th month of the Tibetan calendar.
