Since Lamayuru is on the Leh – Srinagar Highway and it can be visited on the way when you drive towards Leh. Lamayuru monastery is peacefully perched at a distance of 127 KM from Leh and at a height of 3,510 meters. Lamayuru was founded by Mahasiddacarya Naropa in the 11th century. If stories and legends are something you admire, then perhaps this monastery is the door that will open your curiosity and soak yourself in wonder.
The landscape is truly magnificent with its uniquely odd geological features. Lamayuru monastery is purely ancient and it was constructed into a moonscape. It carries some amazing display of frescoes and frightening masks. Lamayuru monastery comprises of 5 buildings, however, the structure now destroyed and only the ruins are left.
The annual festival of Lamayuru monastery is Yuru Kabgyat and it is a huge lodestone for the monastery. During the festival, there will be a mask dance by the lamas. Their rituals include burning of effigies which indicates that it will destroy the ego planted in every individual.
This region is also noted for Hemis Tse Chu. It is celebrated in 5th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. Hemis Tse Chu is the most highlighted monastic festival in Ladakh and it happens for two days.
