Ladakhi New Year which is termed as Losar, kick-starts with umpteen joy and baskets of preparation. Preparations begin with the attire to foods to people moving hither and thither.
During New Year people prefer to unweave the past puzzles and picture a new path. Days pass by chasing the footprints of a childhood cousin and reluctantly tasting butter tea with an uncanny smile. It is believed that the New Year drops the evils and rings in prosperity and well wishes.
Ladakh shows a character with a medley of aesthetic beauty, entralling adventures, and immense calmness. Actually, the Ladakhi Losar and Tibetan Losar were supposed to be on the same days. Yet, it is amusing to note the reason why Ladakhi Losar is now celebrated two months prior to Tibetan New Year. The story says that when the king of Ladakh, Jamyang Namgyal had decided to sojourn for an expedition but was advised by oracles not to do so before Losar.
He found the solution by celebrating New Year exactly when there were only two months for the actual losar date. During Ladakhi New Year, relatives, family and friends come together to rejoice Losar with heaps of joy. They visit each other’s house with a scarf and greet one another with presents. Prayer sessions are being performed in the monasteries. If you are in Ladakh during Losar festival, do not miss boat that will take you on a road with enriching experiences.
